Overview of the Development of Security Surveillance Cameras: Crossing from Analog to Intelligent

From the evolution of the first-generation cameras to the present day, cameras have undergone significant development, transitioning from black and white to color, from standard bullet cameras to all-in-one models, from analog to digital, from standard definition to high definition, and from non-intelligent to intelligent.

 

A camera primarily consists of a lens, an image sensor, a digital signal processor (DSP), and more. The lens focuses the image onto the sensor, which is composed of pixels arranged in an X-Y grid. Each pixel contains a photodiode and related circuitry that converts light into electrical charge. The accumulated charge, proportional to light intensity, is then controlled point by point through related circuits, filtered, amplified, and processed by DSP to create a video signal output.

 

**The Analog Era:**

 

In the era of analog surveillance systems, which emerged in the 1960s, black and white television and cameras were initially applied in military contexts. As black and white cameras found their way into civilian use, the earliest video surveillance systems were born, known as closed-circuit television (CCTV), utilizing analog transmission, also known as analog surveillance systems. During this period, analog cameras output analog video signals, which could be converted to digital signals by encoders. These encoders transformed the analog video signal generated by video capture devices into digital format, which could then be stored in computers. Captured video signals from analog cameras had to be transformed into digital mode via specific video capture cards, compressed, and then transferred to computers for use.

 

During the era of high definition, especially when CMOS high-definition camera technology was not yet mature and costs couldn't rapidly decrease, analog cameras held the majority market share. Analog video surveillance persisted, as high-definition cameras were primarily applied in high-end markets such as government and banking. However, for small and medium-sized surveillance systems like residential communities, shops, small supermarkets, and office buildings, analog cameras still offered high cost-effectiveness.

 

**The Network Era:**

 

With the advent of network video surveillance systems built upon embedded technology, network and communication technology, and intelligent image analysis, video surveillance development entered the digital age. Whether composed of analog cameras plus video servers, network cameras alone, or a hybrid solution, IP surveillance proved to be an attractive solution.

 

The network era brought about the popularity of IP network cameras. These cameras, beyond having the general image capture capability of traditional cameras, incorporated digital compression controllers and web-based operating systems. This allowed video data to be compressed, encrypted, and transmitted via LAN, the Internet, or wireless networks to end users. Network cameras could be directly connected to TCP/IP digital networks. Thus, the primary function of this system was network connectivity, enabling video and audio transmission over the Internet or internal LAN.

 

Network cameras, the core devices in network video surveillance systems, represented the stage and level of development in network video surveillance. Known as the "thousand-mile eyes," network cameras adapted to diversified needs, making them mainstream products in the video surveillance field. Furthermore, the functionalities of network camera products were more enriched compared to traditional products, providing users with more added value. Camera manufacturers also integrated rich and practical features into their IPC products to attract more users.

 

**The HD Era:**

 

In the past, during the standard definition era, video surveillance was typically deployed in small environments with uniform backgrounds and minimal human movement. Even for urban security cameras, the resolution limitations resulted in blurry recorded video. Thus, achieving clarity has always been a fundamental demand in the security surveillance sector.

 

In recent years, with the widespread implementation of Safe City projects across the country, security product technology, especially surveillance products, has experienced leaps in development. The core image sensors of these cameras, CMOS or CCD, can now satisfy the requirements of megapixel high-definition cameras. In addition, high-definition products in network cameras have extended beyond analog camera video processing to encompass image enhancement technologies, such as noise reduction and image stabilization. The mastery and breakthrough of such technologies often require profound accumulation in the development of digital video processing technology and algorithms.

 

**The Intelligent Era:**

 

Camera technology has progressed from introducing basic intelligent analysis features like motion detection and video masking in 2011 to the present day. With the advancement of processing power, front-end cameras can now perform real-time analysis of video content. They can detect moving objects, recognize human and vehicle attributes, and transmit this information to the backend AI central database via networks for storage. Applications such as facial identification, vehicle recognition, video structuring, and behavior analysis have become common.

 

The current industry-wide intelligent upgrade not only involves adding AI to camera products but also leverages practical, intelligent solutions to implement scene applications.
